I'm making some sparring flags for my martial arts school. These are the handles. They are all oak. I've dyed the ones on the right to resemble purple heart, and the others were left plain. Next, I've rubbed them with an oil stain to bring out the pleasant woodgrain. The next step will be to coat them with spar varnish. Also known as "marine" varnish, it's extra-durable wood sealant usable for ship's masts.
